Your friend is pressuring you to try it, your neighbor swears it “changed their life,” social media is packed with endorsements and “evidence” of lives changed, even people at the grocery store are pushing you to consider it; what is this exciting new prospect that could change the scope of your known life? Direct sales, of course, selling an amazing product.
What Are Direct Sales?
Forbes defines direct sales as “offering products ‘directly’ to a customer outside of a fixed retail location.” You have probably also heard them referred to as multilevel marketing companies or MLMs for short. A few of the most well-known MLMs include Pampered Chef, Avon, Amway and AdvoCare. The companies and many more make up a $30 billion industry, so it’s no wonder you sometimes feel slightly bombarded with requests to become a seller. They are a huge industry.
Can You Make Money by Working For a Direct Sales Company? How do You Earn Income?
The million-dollar question is, can you actually make money selling for MLMs? The answer is yes and no. How’s that for ambiguity? It all depends on your skill set, personality and what you are willing to do in order to generate income. Most legitimate MLMs have small joining or starter kit fees. With this, you will purchase your product that you will then sell on behalf of the direct sales company. Your income is usually based off commission per sale. You can also earn prizes, more products and free trips.
You Have to Recruit
To make any real money with an MLM, you have to be able to recruit. This means, pushing (asking) your friends and family members to also join and then “encouraging” them to recruit underneath you. The end result is a line of distributors who work under you, of which you get a piece of the commission they earn. This is why the answer to, “can you make money?“, isn’t easy to answer. It all depends on you. Are you willing to ask your friends and family members to host parties, join as a distributor themselves and is your social circle big enough to sustain this? If your answer is yes, you might do well at such a company. If the answer is an adamant no, then perhaps there is another way to generate income that would fit your personality better.
Directs Sales Can be Good
If you have a huge social circle, love getting together with people in their homes, are passionate about whatever product you are selling, you might do extremely well in direct sales. There are many advantages to this type of work, as it allows you to set your own hours and work as much or as little as you desire. This can be a perfect additional income for stay-at-home moms or others who simply can’t get a “regular job” for whatever reason. It’s also a great way to get products at a reduced cost if you like them enough to purchase them anyway. As with anything, it takes work to succeed. There is no shortcut to success. According to Mary Christensen, who is the author of Be a Direct Selling Superstar you should ask yourself the following question to decide is direct sales is right for you:
“Am I prepared to put the time and effort into achieving my goal? It’s not enough to want it. You have to be willing to work for it.”
